Judaism in general and Orthodox Judaism, in particular, has been terrible at expressing its inner depth. We sat on worlds of treasures through the Torah we were given but we didn’t know how to convey it, sell it.
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks was one of the first Rabbi’s of our generation to rise up and give full expression to the depth and breadth and beauty of Judaism. He did it without needing to compromise with the newfound morals of our age. He was immensely articulate, eloquent, and passionate. In a generation where religion was clobbered and belittled, he showed that you can be supremely intellectual and erudite and believe in G-d, believe in the Torah. And he showed that religion and love of your fellow human being go hand-in-hand. That all of humanity are brothers and sisters under the parenthood of G-d.
He passed away yesterday and it sucks. Losing sucks. It never gets easy. You get numb but it’s never easy.
The world has lost a bit of light and we all know we need more of it now more than ever.
