Ancient and modern philosophy has viewed that the fate of man lies in the hands of fortune. We are born without consent and die without our permission – randomly, haphazardly. All that transpires in history is absurdity, everything means nothing and our life does not signify nor stand for anything. In the clash of man vs. nature, meaningfulness vs. randomness – the cold cruelty of coincidence and chance reign and the fate of humanity is defined by tragedy.
Purim in particular and Judaism in general teach that what cannot be understood has no bearing on its meaning. That the universe is not blind to our dreams, that nature is not deaf to our aspirations, and that G-d is not indifferent to our prayers. That while G-d may be hidden He is always there. And while events may appear random, everything happens with purpose and nothing happens by chance.
