Torah vs. Consumer Cultures

It’s interesting to note the difference between Torah culture vs. the consumer culture. Torah culture emphasizes and has you focus on what you have in life. Consumer culture accentuates and makes you internalize what you are missing in life. The difference parallels the diametrically opposite, yet eerily similar, concepts of value vs. price. The value in your life comes from what can’t be bought – friends, family, significant others – in effect, the spiritual; price is derived from what can be purchased – cars, clothes, phones – in essence, the material.

Shabbat is the time we focus on what has value and not what can be bought with a price.
